CNIO

The Spanish National Cancer Research Centre - Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO) - was founded in 1998 with the mission of developing a comprehensive project for excellence in oncology research. The CNIO is located in Madrid, Spain, and it is recognised today as one of the top leading Cancer Research Institutes worldwide and accredited as Centre of Excellence Severo Ochoa since 2011. According to its mission, the CNIO conducts research of excellence in oncology, translates scientific knowledge into clinical practice to ensure that the scientific discoveries impact as quickly as possible into the Health System, and transfers the technology developed at the CNIO to innovative companies.

At present, the CNIO houses 26 Research Groups/Clinical Research Units, 19 Core Units, and 4 Sections, distributed into Programmes, according to their focus and field of interest. Research Programmes are categorized as Basic Research Programmes (Molecular Oncology, Cancer Cell Biology and Structural Biology and Biocomputing); and Translational Research Programmes (Human Cancer Genetics and Clinical Research). The groups included in these programmes aim to cover different aspects related to cancer research, from the very basic molecular mechanisms involved in cell malignancy, to the development and application of therapeutic and diagnostic approaches closer to the patients. The broad scope and complementarity of research lines, in a multidisciplinary environment, favours the collaborations and synergies among the groups.

In addition to these Research Programmes, there is an Innovation Area, which includes the Experimental Therapeutics Programme (ETP) and the Biotechnology Programme. The ETP contains all the capabilities required to perform all the early steps involved in the new drugs discovery process for cancer treatment. It works in collaboration with the Research Groups of the other Programmes, which provide the knowledge on new targets to set up novel drug discovery projects. Finally, the Biotechnology Programme´s main mission is to provide expert technical support and advice to CNIO Research Groups in a number of disciplines and technologies widely used in biomedical research, as well as to implement and develop state-of-the-art biotechnological tools and reagents for cancer research. The Programme is composed of 9 Core Units covering major areas in Biotechnology: Genomics, Proteomics, Monoclonal Antibodies, Histopathology, Flow Cytometry, Confocal Microscopy, Molecular Imaging, Transgenic Mice, as well as an Animal Facility.

Collaborative projects
The collaborative projects bring together at least two transnational partners (academic or industrial) from France, Spain and Portugal.
They aim at setting up innovations in the oncology field.
